About Post 178

Lakewood Post 178 held its first meeting February 15, 1941 with 32 Charter WWI members in attendance. Today over 700 veterans from WWII through the present belong to Post 178. Our Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion squadrons expand total membership to over 1100.

These units plus Post 178’s Legion Riders carry out a variety of fund raising and service activities throughout the year to support veterans and youth. The Colorado State Veterans Center in Homelake, Denver’s VA Hospital, and Redistribution Center Inc. (RCI) are among our favorite beneficiaries.

We support our troops through programs like Angel Tree, Comfort Warriors, Fisher House, and the Legion’s National Emergency Fund. Post 178 is a major contributor to the Legion’s Child Welfare Foundation. Community organizations like Colorado Boy’s and Girl’s State, the Arvada Junior Shooting Sports, the JFK High School JROTC Honor Platoon, and Colorado Veterans Kids Fund also receive our support.

Our restaurant, operated entirely by volunteers, serves a variety of homemade dishes throughout the week. We keep prices low while still raising proceeds for the Post’s many beneficiaries.  Our lounge serves a full array of beverages seven days per week at unbeatable prices.

Veteran members of Post 178 receive a free spaghetti dinner on Veteran’s Day. Moms and Dads who are members enjoy a complementary breakfast on their respective holidays.  Our popular Memorial and Independence Day Picnics (free to members) draw hundreds of families to our spacious backyard furnished with a permanent BBQ, regulation horseshoe pits, covered patio, and extensive children’s playground. Our large meeting hall accommodates a variety of events including our annual Christmas Party for Kids, Early Bird Dinner (free to renewing members), dance parties, members’ celebrations, and veterans’ bereavements. Many of the metro area’s finest show cars fill our parking lot every September for one of Denver’s most popular car shows.

We invite you to stop by and see why Post 178 has long been known as “The Friendly Post.” When you join, you’ll find friends with a common background enjoying a home away from home while serving veterans through a wide range of family friendly activities and volunteer opportunities.
